Paruppu Podi Recipe - How to make Paruppu podi at home

Paruppu Podi Recipe - How to make Paruppu podi at home:

Paruppu podi is a great and tasty accompaniment for plain rice. I tasted it for the first time in 2007 when I was staying in a hostel while working. I remember one of my ever green friends used to bring this to the dining table every time we had rice during weekends. I fondly call her as Sangeetha akka. She is really a nice human being. She is so soft and caring too. She was so kind enough to share paruppu podi with all of us. Even though we had nice kulambu for rice, we usually started the lunch with the it. After that the caterers in my office cafeteria started having it in their daily menu. Paruppu podi tastes yummy and tasty with ghee or gingelly oil while having with hot rice. My mom used to make Paruppu podi at home and she used to give me after marriage. Nowadays I am good enough on making paruppu podi at home on my own:-)

Paruppu podi is a guilt free recipe especially when you are cooking for 2 or for you and your baby. Most of the days, I make fresh toor dal for my little one and I have it. It is so healthy since it is made out of toor dal and also it saves lot of time. So, try this recipe at your home and have a healthy side dish for rice in no time.

Easy paruppu podi recipe

Ingredients:

  • Toor Dal/Thuvaram paruppu  - 250g
  • Dry Red Chillies - 2
  • Cumin seeds - 1 tsp
  • Curry Leaves - few
  • Whole Black Pepper - 1 tsp
  • Garlic - 2 flakes
  • Hing - A pinch
  • Salt - As required
  • Oil - 1 tsp

Instructions:

1. Take all the ingredients and keep it ready. Heat oil in a pan.

2. Add curry leaves, toor dal and red chillies. Roast till the toor dal starts turning to golden brown color slightly.

3. Add  cumin seeds, black pepper and hing. Fry for 2 more minutes.

4. Switch off the stove and allow it to cool down.

5. Grind in a mixer with garlic flakes and required salt.

My Notes:

1. Make sure that you grind paruppu podi to a very fine powder. Otherwise it will be crunchy and does not taste good with rice.

2. You can add 50g of roasted gram(pottukadalai) too. Add it while adding cumin seeds, fry it and grind along with the other ingredients.

3. Take care of toor dal not getting burnt.

4. You can increase the quantity of red chillies and garlic flakes according to your taste. Adding more garlic flakes gives you nice aroma.

5. It tastes best with hot rice.

6. Ghee and sesame oil/gingelly oil are the best accompaniments while having with rice.

7. Use sufficient quantity of paruppu podi while having. Adding less quantity will not taste so good.
