Homemade Curry leaves Hair oil

Option 1(Ancestral Method):

Ingredients:

Curry leaves - Generous bunch

Coconut oil - 1/2 litre
Cardamom powder - optional

Preparation:

1. Wash the curry leaves.

2. Grind it in Mixer with little water.
3. Filter and extract the juice.
4. Heat oil in a pan and add juice.
5. Put the stove in simmer and stir it frequently till it starts turning into dark color(black residues start forming) or the bubbles start coming. Filter the oil and use it. The black residues can also be applied on hair since it is also good.
6. Add cardamom powder if you like the fragrance.Add it now and then.

Option 2(Very quick and easy method):

Ingredients:

Curry leaves - Handful

Coconut oil - 100 ml
Cardamom powder - A pinch(optional)

Preparation:

1. Take a handful of fresh curry leaves. Rinse them well.

2. Allow it to dry till there is no moisture left in the curry leaves.

3. Grind it in a mixer and make a coarse powder.

4. Heat 100 ml coconut oil in a pan in low flame.

5. Once the oil starts becoming hot, add the curry leaves and stir it continuously. Add 1 cardamom if you want to get a good fragrance. Do not go anywhere leaving the pan unattended since oil will catch fire easily. Once the curry leaves starts turning to brown color, switch off the stove immediately. By this time, the oil also should have turned to golden brown color. Allow the oil to cool down.

6. Strain the oil using a filter and the homemade curry leaves hair oil is ready for use. Store it in an air tight container or glass bottle.

Your healthy homemade curry leaves hair oil is ready with the goodness of curry leaves.

Check out the video on how to make instant curry leaves hair oil for massaging with fresh curry leaves. You can also follow the same way to make in large quantity.

Note: More videos on different ways to prepare curry leaves are coming up soon. Stay tuned!!

Note:

The oil should not be heated very high. It should be in simmer or medium flame only based on the pan and stove you are using. High heat can cause the oil to become rancid. You can also use double boiler to infuse oil with curry leaves if you have one. I will post how to infuse oils in double boiler method soon in case you do not have double boiler.

    1. Massage this oil on your scalp and hair thoroughly with your finger tips and leave it overnight. Wash your hair next morning. I apply homemade shikakai or shampoo mixed with water weekly twice. If you do not like oily hair, you can mix little herbal shampoo or homemade shikakai in sufficient water and apply it during every hair wash.

  3. hi sundari, you have mentioned in the 6th point Add water and stir the mix till it turns to black color or the bubbles start coming.
my query is adding water to oil will make it splutter and mixing it till it turns back in color would make the oil loose its essential proprieties. Please clarify.

    1. Hi Pramila. Thanks for your kind notice. Updated the post incorporating your comments. You will hear crackling sound while boiling. Stir continuously. Boiling oil in high heat will make the oil rancid. This method is quick method to prepare curry leaves oil at home and you are going to do in simmer. Once you feel that the curry leaves juice mixed with oil, you can switch off. There are lot of other ways to prepare it. But they are time consuming. We usually prefer this method since it is very easy method and this is how we prepare oil for generations and it is effective. Watch this space for the other methods. Thanks again for your query. 1. Hi Malar, kindly decide whether you are going to use curry leaves hair oil as a main hair oil for daily use. If so, you can directly apply without reheating the oil since it is already heated. If you like to apply it warm because of cold weather, use double boiler method for making it warm. If you do not have double boiler, take a bowl and pour required quantity of curry leaves hair oil. Then take another bowl which is slightly larger than the first one. Pour little water inside the larger bowl and heat the water. Once it is fully boiled, place the smaller bowl with the oil inside the hot water bowl carefully. The oil will become warm and you can use it. Carefully select the bowls so that you can easily place one inside the another.

    2. Switch off the stove before placing the oil bowl. Please let me know if you have any more doubts.

    1. Hi Malar, I can understand your feelings how sad you will feel when you see your daughter's white hair in this young age. Nowadays, lot of young children are suffering from white hairs in very young age. Apply hair oil daily and leave it overnight for her. Also, give her Keerai atleast twice a week. Buy amla powder or amla and give it to her daily with honey. Even anemia and lack of Vitamins may lead to white hairs. So, check out her HB level and consult a doctor to increase it if it is less. It is very important to stop greying further.

Reg, curry leaves hair oil, boiling oil in high heat will make the oil rancid. This method is quick method to prepare curry leaves oil at home and you are going to do in simmer. Once you feel that the curry leaves juice mixed with oil, you can switch off. There are lot of other ways to prepare it. But they are time consuming. 1. 1. It is not necessary to wash your hair every next day. You can wash if you do want to have your look oily. Wash only once or twice a week with shampoo. But you can rinse your hair daily.
      2. No need to reheat the oil. Just use it.

My cousin has oily skin and she has been using Dove soap and she says that it is good. I have recently tried Amway persona soap, and Lux - both Peach and strawberry flavors.. They both suited me well. Just try different soaps. Buy smaller size and check which one you like the most.

I have just checked different resources for your query. It seems Medimix soap and face wash works well for oily skin. Can you please try and tell us which one suit you well.

  23. hai madam. I am a 27 yr old male. I have lots of grey hair on my head. I use Dhathri hair oil plus. They say that use it for 3 months and the white hairs will turn black. Is it possible? Also plz tell how long I have to use the curry leaves oil so that the grey hairs be treated?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I am not sure about the Dhathri hair plus oil. I will be more interested to hear from you if it helps to turn your hair color to black. Please come back and add your comment if you see any changes.

It will be quite disheartening to see grey hairs:-( But, I see so many young children who have not crossed even 10 years of age have lot of grey hairs.

There are lot of factors which can cause grey hairs like stress, lack of body nutrition like inadequate vitamins or folic acids, lack of hair nutrition, pollution, lack of caring hair ..

I also started getting 1 or 2 grey hairs. I felt very sad at that time. But I later understood that it is quite normal for every one at this age.

In my experience, when I do the following, the grey hairs are not getting increased. I have tried few other alternatives. But they did not stop further greying. I found this routine works best for me. Check whether it is helpful for you.

      1. Daily intake of amla powder with honey, a minimum of fresh curry leaves and 2 dates.
      2. Washing hair at least twice a week. I feel homemade shikakai or dove shampoo with conditioner are best for my hair. Choose which one suits best for your hair type.
      3. Intake of spinach at least twice a week.
      4. Continuous usage of curry leaves hair oil or homemade Amla hair oil. If you are not able to prepare at home, I found amway amla hair oil to be the best amla hair oil for grey hair. I have tried few other hair oils. But they were not effective in prevention of grey hairs.
      5. I apply godrej nupur henna with curd or oil twice a month.

Please let me know if you have any more queries.

    1. Hi Rehan, sometimes you need to wait for few months to see the results and to check whether a particular product is effective for you. Generally, we need to use a product for around 6 months to see the complete results. As I have already mentioned in the post, do not prepare and store in bulk. Just prepare 100 ml oil for each person. Try to finish in 2 weeks and prepare fresh oil again.

    1. Hi Piyu, Does the oil have difference in color? It should have got a kind of green or brown shade. If there is change in the color of oil, the oil might have absorbed the nutrients of curry leaves. In that case, allow the curry leaves powder to stay in the oil for some more time(not in stove) if you feel that the oil has to absorb some more. You can even keep it under sun. In 2 or 3 days, you can filter the oil and use it.

    1. Please check the smell of oil. You can find whether it is rancid or not. Also if you have added 100% coconut oil like(VVD Gold or Parachute) which are also edible, you can even taste a drop of oil. If the taste is good, it is not rancid. Please make sure you have not added anything else unedible in the oil.

Since u r washing ur hair everyday, applying oil will not be a problem for u. Try to apply oil and keep it overnight. Else, apply it at least 20 minutes before. Try to keep the oil to a maximum no of hours. u can use curry leaves with coconut oil itself. U can apply sesame oil once or twice a week and take shikakai bath.

  42. Hi Ma’am thanks for your blog. I stay in New Delhi for the past 9 years. My relatives brought lot of curry leaves and I couldn't use everything, so thought of making hair oil out of it. Main reason behind this idea is of my premature grey hair due to harsh water. Hence I found your page with Ancestral method wherein I can use lot of curry leaves. I had more than 5 kg of curry leaves, so I repeatedly grinded with lot of water and finally I could take out all extracts in 2 litres. Thereafter I boiled and condensed those extracts in to proper paste and allowed them to cool, further I added 1/2 litre of coconut oil to the paste and heated in simmer with frequent mixing till bubbles prompt out. Then I cooled the mixture (oil and residue) and stored in the bottle. But the residue got settled down and can see green oil at the top. I shake the bottle before use so I can apply residue too. Though it was a bit time taking process but felt good for trying ancestral method
    Ma'am I have few doubts,
    1. The method which I followed.. like condensing the extract and then heated with oil will have same effect like you mentioned? I'm worried because I doubt whether the property of curry extracts would have changed as I made it in fine paste after prolonged boiling!?.
    2. I have made 1/2 litre of hair oil. Should I need to refrigerate or I can keep it in normal room temperature? Because it's homemade hence we don't have preservatives added for long use.
    3. Can I apply this oil with residue on daily bases and take hair was only twice a week with V-care shikkakai paste?

Ma’am, please clear my doubts... Thanks for your wonderful blog!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. 1. I am not sure whether it is effective or not. But there is no harm in using it if it did not become rancid.

    2. It will be good if you can finish in a month. The oil will slowly start loosing its effectiveness if we store it for long time. Otherwise the oil will not get spoiled easily for 2 to 3 months. I have never refrigerated oil and used. So, I don't have idea on refrigeration. You can store in a large glass air tight container. Take 100 ml and pour in a small bottle whenever needed and use it.

    3. You can apply daily basis. But make sure that you apply oil without residue if you are not taking hair bath the next day. You can filter and use it as and when required. You can apply with residue the day before you take hair wash.

    3. Yes you can use daily. Use shikakai powder to wash your hair twice a week. You can wash your hair without any products on the other days if you want to clean the hair daily.

Eat amla and curry leaves on daily basis to get cure for hair problems. Easy way to consumer them is to grind the amla and few curry leaves in a mixie. Grind it with little water. Add buttermilk and salt. Drink it.

  45. Hi madam, I'm 28 years old.Now I have nearly 40 percent grey hairs.. That too grey hairs near my forehead itself. So I'm applying only mehandi leaves to cover up grey hairs..since last 2 Years. But recently due to lot of greyhairs, it's giving reddish or saffron look. I'm only using shikkai powder for my hair wash. I found this blog is very useful. I'll try methods suggested by you for prevention of grey hairs and get back to you. But please suggest me some solution for colouring of grey hairs.I'm very scared to use artificial hair colourings at this stage itself. Is there any natural ingredients that can be used along with mehandi leaves for colouring.
